About 33% of Female Workers Have Been Sexually Harassed at Work by the Age of 34, Study Finds

While women have made great strides in the U.S. workforce, rising to prominent roles and occupations over the past few decades, some continue to face some significant challenges and issues at work – particularly when it comes to being treated with dignity and respect by colleagues, managers, etc.

In fact, the findings of a recent study published in a major women’s magazine1 underscore that just how prevalent workplace sexual harassment is – as well as who is most likely to perpetrate it and what types of workers are most often the targets of it. And some of these findings are bound to shock you.

Study’s Findings regarding Workplace Sexual Harassment in the U.S.

This study surveyed more than 2,230 women who work part- or full-time in the U.S. According to the study’s findings:

  • About 1 in 3 women who are younger than 35 have experienced workplace sexual harassment at least once.
  • About 1 in 6 women do not necessarily know when they have experienced workplace sexual harassment – In fact, researchers found that these respondents who had stated they had never been sexually harassed at work had agreed that they had been subjected to sexually charged or sexist remarks at work.
  • More than 4 in 5 women have been verbally sexually harassed at least once at work.
  • Nearly 45 percent of respondents have been touched inappropriately or have been the targets of unwanted sexual advances at work at least once in the past.
  • About 1 in every 4 respondents has received at least one text message or email from a colleague that was sexually suggestive or obscene.
  • Although the vast majority of women who were the targets of workplace sexual harassment experienced harassment from a male co-worker, manager or customer, about 1 in 10 women had been sexually harassed at work by another woman.
  • While workplace sexual harassment claims often arise from those working in the hospitality and retail industries, industries that see relatively few sexual harassment complaints include the education and health care industries.
  • Close to 3 in every 4 cases of workplace sexual harassment are never reported or investigated.
